Anyone else noticing a trend where people feel “over” internet marketing.

Now, I’m not going to go shouting from the rooftops that InTErNeT MaRkETiNg iz DeAd…

Learning how to communicate all the ways your offer can help people solve their problems is a powerful skill that has existed since the dawn of time.

Plus – at the risk of letting my nerd light shine too bright – I love marketing!

Analyzing the human condition, decoding the psychology behind why people do what they do, the way it’s like piecing together a giant puzzle of the brain…

It tickles me.

Maybe it’s just that the space feels saturated…

Or that people are feeling collectively burned out by the past few years…

Or maybe too many ‘gurus’ are teaching horrendous outreach techniques that have flooded our DMs and inboxes with more unsolicited spam than ever…

Who knows.

It just feels like there’s a lack of innovation going on in the space – and it could be that I’ve just been “in it” and have lost sight of the wider landscape…

But everything is feeling a little “samey” lately.

I’ve also noticed a lot of weird gatekeeping going on …

Which is strange, considering most people preach “collaboration over competition” – but things are a bit weird right now, which tends to make people more territorial.

In general, I get the sense that a lot of marketers have a secret (or not-so-secret) desire to fade out of the scene and do something – anything – else.

I can’t say I blame them. I mean – personally I’d like to disappear into the forest…

living the rest of my days as a bog witch with my growing colony of animals …

Harvesting questionable plants from the wild terrain as I become more feral by the day.

You ever hear that question from Dean Jackson, “ I’ll know I’m successful when…”

Well, as soon as the local youth spread rumors about how approaching my cabin can lead to an early demise – I’ll know I’ve made it.

But I digress…

The point is, The whole space of “marketing the idea of marketing to marketers” just isn’t feeling fun.

And I truly believe that business SHOULD be fun. Otherwise why do it at all?!

Which is why I’ve been spending a lot of time exploring projects that leverage my skill set, but on a completely different playground.

Things like:

  • helping burned-out visionaries learn to love their businesses again
  • teaching homesteaders and permaculturists how to sell their stuff
  • taking the money I earned “online” and growing it through “offline” investments
  • helping founders exit their companies and start new passion projects

I’m still very much in exploration mode – but so far it’s been a helluva good time.

If you’re still loving the internet marketing space, I celebrate you and encourage you to take risks and try something new – especially if it brings us closer to having authentic, personal conversations with each other.

But if you’re feeling like you want to explore something new – something “marketing adjacent” – I’d love to hear more about what you’ve been working on.

Shoot me a message and let me know.
