I don’t believe in niching down.
The world doesn’t need another specialist who can only operate inside one tiny box.
It needs leaders who can see the whole board — and roll up their sleeves to move the pieces where they need to be.
Lots of people call that a “unicorn.” 🦄
But personally, I think the word’s been abused to death.
Most of the time, “unicorn” just means someone doing 12 jobs for the price of one. That’s not rare. That’s exploitation.
The real rare skill is leveling up across disciplines. Not niching down until you’re irrelevant…
But building mastery that cuts across silos, so you can create clarity where others see chaos.
Here’s what that looks like when leading growth in a business:
- Managing a multi-million-dollar ad budget while still getting creative about how you approach copy and media
- Becoming well versed in what works NOW for different media formats
- Leading creative strategy that takes charge of how the world discovers your business.
- Working directly with CEOs, visionaries, and teams — not just as a task-checker, but as a partner.
- Understanding product and offer creation, marketing, outbound sales – and how they all fit together.
- Seeing an exciting playground where others only see obstacles
That’s not a unicorn. That’s a leader who’s dangerous in the best way: versatile, strategic, and capable of scaling what others can’t.
So when someone tells you to “niche down”?
Smile politely. Then go become impossible to put in a box. 🙂
